Why the Moon Shines Brighter in Ladakh's Lamayuru?
Wednesday Post: Know about India’s Lunar Terrain in Ladakh, embark on a Delhi-Jaipur Road Trip, experience the homeland of Mt Everest & watch Kenya’s beloved Maasai Mara
There is a word in Korean. In-Yeon. It means providence or fate.
It's an in-yeon if the moon shines on the moon-land and continues shining over it every night. Because it means there must have been something between them in their past lives.
That's what it feels like when you visit Lamayuru in western Ladakh, aka the Moonland of India. On a full moon night when the bright moon shines exuberantly, the unique geological formations, valleys, rifts, and ridges will baffle you, leaving you wondering whether this is real lunar terrain.
History says almost 40,000 years ago, this quaint village of Lamayuru was submerged under a lake. With passing centuries, the lake dried up and left behind mud and sediment, which later whimsically eroded into this-like structure.
Apart from the unique lunar structures in Ladakh, this village is home to one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Ladakh. The monastery had five buildings which now numbers down to only one and is home to more than 150 monks. And its people - what beautiful a place is without its people?
From trekking down the Lamayuru valleys to experiencing the lunar terrain, Lamayuru might not be in everyone’s Ladakh conventional itinerary. But now that you know, you shouldn't miss it anymore.
Don’t you think now, there is an in-yeon between the moon and this moonland in Ladakh? A connection from their past lives that is still thriving in the present?
