When I utter the word ‘Thailand’, it strikes a chord deep within your heart, doesn't it? Ah, the land of colorful tuk-tuks whizzing through vibrant streets, the aroma of mouthwatering street food that tantalizes your taste buds, and those mesmerizing beaches of Koh Samui, luring you into the embrace of crystal-clear waters. For us millennials, it's nothing short of a dream destination.
But guess what? Our dream destination is facing a surprising challenge: a water crisis!
I know, it sounds like a total paradox. How can this slice of paradise be in such a bind? But here's the twist – this isn't the first time a Thai island has encountered this problem.
Remember Maya Bay? About ten years ago, the government had to close it down to allow the coral and wildlife to recover from the effects of excessive tourism. It needed a breather to bounce back from the barren state tourists had left it in.
And history might repeat itself sooner than we think! Koh Samui, the marvelous island we all adore, might also shut its doors to tourism due to a serious freshwater crisis.
